2008 Instructions for Independent Team Projects

Independent Team Projects (non-SURF projects) will be judged in the Poster category only. Presentations will be coordinated by the home department. Teams should contact home department for presentation time schedule and poster printing schedule

Project Description

All teams are required to submit a 150 word maximum overview of their project/presentation for use in the program booklet. Insert text in the Overview section of the registration form.

Overview
150 words or less that summarizes in paragraph form:
-project goals/objectives
-the project significance/importance/value
-the design approach
-notable highlights on design validation

Poster Information

The poster is a hybrid between a research paper and an oral presentation. The most important differences between a research paper and a poster are:

• A poster is more concise since the author is present to explain and elaborate. You should typically have a single page for each section of your poster.
• There is more emphasis on visual display, graphics, etc.
• You can use photographs in addition to other illustrations.

Poster Criteria

• Posters should adequately summarize the problem solving process used to arrive at the proposed solution. The following is a suggested guideline (students should adjust the content as appropriate to fit the nature of the project and departmental requirements).

    Each team will be assigned either an AM or PM poster judging timeframe (opposite your scheduled presentation time frame). You are strongly encouraged to be stationed near your poster as much as possible during your assigned judging time in order to answer questions regarding your display.

Helpful Hints

1. All display materials and items (graphs, pictures, etc.) should be attached to the display board. Limited table space will be available for display materials.
2. Posters should be readable from a distance of 4 feet.
3. The poster should be balanced and organized in a logical, sequential order.
4. Keep the amount of text to a minimum. Emphasize graphics--tables, charts, graphs, and photos.
5. Use white space to make the reading easier.
6. Posters must be self-supported and stand on either a 3'X6' table top or 3'X6' open space.
